Members of an ethnic group experience a shift in their sense of self through psychological assimilation. When people stop identifying with their ethnic group and instead identify with the more incredible culture, they become mentally integrated. People become less self-conscious of their ethnicity due to increasing levels of psychological assimilation. For instance, if one is unfamiliar with the practices and traditions of a new culture, one may experience some initial anxiety or confusion. However, it is possible that, through psychological assimilation, they will appreciate the unique culture and adopt practices and attitudes consistent with that understanding and acceptance.
